What is stand up paddling?
It's water-top magic carpet ride! With a huge, super-stable, surfboard under your feet and a super long paddle in your hand, you'll be gliding accross the water in your very first lesson regardless of your age or athletic ability! Our lessons take place where sea turtles play and ocean life thrives.
Do I have to know how to surf?
You don't have to know how to surf at all! However, all paddlers must know how to swim. Unless you sign up for the stand up paddle surf class, we'll be exploring the still, smooth, secluded waters of the North Shore for an awesome flat water experience. You'll be hooked!
Am I too young, old, big or small?
Participants must be at least 7 years old and is good health. This sport is not just for the kids. There are tons of stand up paddlers well over 70 years old! Our boards can handle paddlers up to 250 pounds, so come on out and join us.
What do I need to bring?
Swimsuit, smiles and sunscreen.
What about rain, weather and ocean conditions?
Hey, we're on a tropical island and it wouldn't be paradise without the rain. A light Hawaiian mist makes for great paddling. However, if it's really coming down, we'll reschedule your lesson for another convenient time. If in doubt, call first. While it's raining hard on one side of the island, it can be bright and sunny on the other. If in doubt, call us to confirm the lesson.
Likewise, if we deem the ocean conditions for the day dangerous for any reason at all, we reserve the right to reschedule your lesson to another convenient time. Hey, safety first.
I'm just one person. Can I join a group lesson?
Of course. Simply sign up for a group lesson and you'll automatically be added to that group. Or, if you prefer a private lesson, you can book one of those instead. Read about both and choose whatever will be best for you.
Where do I go for my lesson?
Meet at the white monument on the North Shore of Oahu in Haleiwa across from the restaurant, Jamesons by the Sea (62-540 Kamehameha Hwy. Haleiwa, HI 96712). Park anywhere near the monument and look for the boards and paddles lined up on the sand. Plan on arriving 15-30 minutes early just in case there's traffic. We gotta' start on-time, baby!
How long does it take to get there?
From Waikiki, with no traffic, it'll be a beautiful 45 minute drive across the center of the island, through the pineapple fields, and to the beautiful beaches of the North Shore.
From Turtle Bay Resort near Kahuku, give it about 30 minutes unless there's a surf contest, then give it 45.
From Haleiwa Town, it's like 30 seconds east. Once to get to the east side of Haleiwa, there's only one road that goes all the way around the island. It's on that road.
Remeber to plan on arriving 15-30 minutes early just in case there's traffic. Shoot, come an hour early and enjoy the beach for a while first. The lesson location is minutes from Sunset Beach, Pipeline, and Waimea Bay.
